Marathi Bhasha Bhavan, Mumbai, is envisioned as a vibrant cultural destination celebrating Marathi language, literature, and heritage. Located along the Marine Drive precinct, the design responds to its linear waterfront context through a composition of three cuboidal volumes, forming a cohesive architectural identity that balances clarity, function, and a strong urban presence.

Each of the three volumes accommodates distinct programmatic functions while contributing to a unified spatial order. This linear arrangement reinforces hierarchy and allows the building to align naturally with its site. The simplicity of form enhances legibility, creating an architectural expression that is both contemporary and rooted in its cultural context.

A continuous metal jaali façade binds the structure together, featuring perforations and the word “मराठी” in Devnagri script. This expressive layer functions as a climatic screen, filtering sunlight, reducing heat gain, and framing views of the Arabian Sea. It transforms the façade into a symbolic as well as a functional element that reflects linguistic identity.

The building houses galleries, an auditorium, a children’s science centre, and public spaces including amphitheatres and exhibition areas. Active ground-level zones invite community engagement, while internal voids enhance light and connectivity. Together, these elements create a dynamic civic landmark that fosters cultural exchange, learning, and meaningful public interaction.
